Chapter 36: Familyhood

I woke from the nap with Colby buried in the crook of my right arm, spittle on my lower lip, and Dugan Brae sitting at the end of the bed in a reading chair, watching me with his son.

As Colby lightly snored, Dugan said, “How are my two men doing?”

I stretched a little and yawned. “Your kid wore me out.” Then I told him about our trip to Mazeworld and to get ice cream. “We had the time of our lives together. To tell you the truth, I didn’t ever see myself with a child, but after today, I do.”

He grinned, pleased with my confession and how I had gotten along with his son. “You two look adorable together.”

“Colby doesn’t even have to try. He’s adorable.”

“I agree with that. The kid has my heart. Always has. Always will. There’s something great about seeing yourself in your child. It sounds a bit selfish, but it’s true.”

I yawned, stretched again, and eventually pulled from the boy’s side. Seconds later, I stood. “I need a hot tea. Will you join me?”

He looked at Colby and then at me. “I’d love a cup of hot tea with you.”

We had hot tea with honey and milk in my kitchen and talked about his afternoon. I learned that his meeting with Grinell Foods International went well.

“Two sisters want to build massive greenhouses across the Midwest. Stone & Brae Incorporated will be taking the project over. The sisters intend to grow soy and other vegetables.” Dugan added, “Some deals come together fast and without faults. Others are like this one. The sisters’ demands are high and…” His words trailed off. “I’m boring the hell out of you, aren’t I? Your eyes are starting to close.”

I chuckled. “I’m sorry. It’s just easy to feel relaxed around you. What can I say?”

“First off, you can tell me to shut up and talk about something interesting. And secondly, you can stop being so damn handsome.”

We kissed, which blew my world apart for a few seconds, melting every fiber.

Then he said, “What do you say we continue this familyhood thing by watching a movie together and having some more tea?”

“Sounds like a plan.”

We watched Milk Money from 1994. We laughed together, sitting shoulder to shoulder, and drank two more cups of tea. Eventually, Colby joined us, snuggled between our bodies on my sofa, and enjoyed the movie.

Truth told, I never felt more like a father and husband in all my life. Safe. Relaxed. Loved. Cared for. Normal. Everything about that time with the father and son seemed real and amazing. I felt whole and important, and I didn’t want to get up once the movie had ended. I simply wanted to snuggle beside the father and son and relish the moment for another hour or more on the sofa, if not longer.

Following the movie and snuggling, Dugan stretched, yawned, and ruffled a hand through his son’s hair. He told Colby, “We have to get you home to your mom, buddy.
